I live in knoxville, TN and I know water has chlorine added to it, but in the last year or two i've noticed that the water smells more of chlorine and when i accidentally left my clothes to soak in the washer they came out with bleach-like spots on some of the shirts. I know that chlorine is added to water to kill bacteria in the water. Your area may have needed to add more recently. Jeremy gave you the most likely answer. If the amount of chlorine does not return to what it was before but remains high, the water supplier might have extended the mains to reach new customers. They would then have to increase the amount of chlorine added in order to maintain the minimum amount of chlorine required when the water reaches the users at the end of the line. Call or write to your water supplier to tell them what happened. They will explain and, possibly, do something about it.It's all part of the political conspiracy to get voters ready for more nonsense & paranoia. Come on people - lighten up a little. This fiasco will soon be over!Your water treatment plant might have switched the chemical they use to disinfect and maintain in the distribution system. Some treatment plants use chlorine and some use a different version of chlorine called chloramine. One other possibility is that they might have detected bacteria in the distribution system (water systems are required to hundreds of samples of their water and test for bacteria every month). If they found some, they might have increased the dosage of chlorine that month to kill the bacteria.
You should call your water utility to check. Most treatments have a public outreach phone number that you can call if you have questions.
