How old should you be when you get your very first puppy ?

  • Yeah! I have never ever had a puppy and I want one very badly! Oh yeah tell me which kind of dog should I get. Here are some examples
Size:Small Color: Any except gray but it depends on the dog Personality:Nice and full of smartness
Walks:not often but maybe a mile long two days each week or something (30 min.) Price:200 through 400 $ $ $ nice around cats weight:6 lbs 20 lbs Gender:Male

  • I think you should be at least 18 (i.e. an adult) but not sure what the law says esp wherever you are.

Dogs are supposed to be walked everyday. They are a big responsibility and require a lot of time and effort.

  • Dogs are NOT cheap. I pay over 1,0000dollars in dog care, food etc, NOT including VET BILLS. Remember DOGS ARE FOR LIFE. Toy/small breeds can live OVER 15YEARS! If you can't walk a dog daily, then your NOT ready for a dog NO matter what age you are! Never buy a puppy without both parents permission either. 99.9% of people who DO go and buy a puppy without permission, Parents end up taken the kid and puppy to the pound and dumping the Poor animal in Shelters/pound! THIS IS NOT RESPONBILE PET OWNERSHIP

    1. NEVER buy a PUPPY younger then 8WEEK old!
They need to remain with the litter until that age to develope proper behavioural and socialiation skills

    2. NEVER BUY A PUPPY just LOOKS, colour, looks, fur type alone-NO INDICATION OF DOGS TEMPERMENT!

    3. Consider your lifestyle

    4. Are you out more then 8hours a day

    5. Consider your energy requirements, Size, Grooming.

    6. Don't just buy because someone says this is the dog for you, people particular on yahoo answer will give you there particular favourite breed& what suits them, not what actually suit you.

    7. Read all you can-THERE are alot of false information on the web and in books about different dog breed.

    8. DON'T TRUST THOSE DOG BREED SELECTORS-MOST OF THE RESULTS ARE INCORRECT. Ex i search large breed dogs, and the Pomeranian came up, which of cause is a toy dog breed!!

    9. NEVER BUY A TOY/SMALL BREED DOG FOR CHILDREN UNDER 8YRS OLD, However, toy/small breeds are best suited to children 10yr+, Most shelters will only rehome toy/small breed if the children are 10yrs+, Also toy/small breeds are extremely fragile and children cannot help being clumsy, remember a toy/small breed dog could be injured or killed by accidently dropping them on the patio, also they can be killed by jumping from the couch, etc.

    10. Never BUY A DOG, CAT, BIRD OR RABBIT OR GUINEA PIG AS CHRISTMAS, BIRTHDAY, NEW YEAR'S DAY OR ANY SPECIAL DAY, AS MANY PEOPLE JUST DON'T HAVE THE TIME, PATIENCE TO TRAIN OR LOOK AFTER A PET, ALSO MANY PEOPLE RENTING, LANDLORD'S DON'T ALLOW PETS.

    11. NEVER BUY FROM A PETSTORE, BACKYARD BREEDER, PUPPY MILL OR NEWSPAPER, DON'T BUY FROM NEXT DAY PETS OR DOG BREED INFO, RESCUE AN ADULT DOG OR SHELTER PUPPY!

    12. Are you willing to give up holidays to care and train and socialize your pup until its old enough to stay home around 1yr old on its own, with someone coming by to check on it, feed and water and walk it and play with it?

Number 1 Toy/small breeds are NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 8 YRS! ACTUALLY RECOMMEND FOR CHILDREN 10YR OLD.

EVEN TOY/SMALL DOGS NEED DAILY WALKS! SMALL DOGS DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN BE WALKED 2 DAYS A WEEK!
Choosing an adult rescue over a puppy does not guarantee you will never have any problems with a new pet, it just increases the probability that you won't. Of course, with any new pet, there is an adjustment period while the dog learns what you expect of it. The difference is that an adult dog, specially chosen for various traits compatible with you and your home situation, are not having to learn as much as a growing puppy, so they usually fit into their new families very quickly. For most of us, an adult dog is much more suited to our needs than a puppy.

Cute as they are, puppies are a tremendous responsibility and, with the busy schedules that most of us have, impossible to housebreak completely, socialize well, and train adequately. If you are not able or willing to do what is necessary to raise a puppy correctly, you may end up wanting to surrender a dog yourself!

Adopting an adult rescue can be the best decision, and addition to your family, that you ever make. Rescue a dog and get a devoted friend for life! Go ahead, do a "GOOD DEED," adopt a dog in need of a home. Give a dog a chance it otherwise would not have. But, beyond doing a "good deed", do yourself a favor and adopt an adult dog.

  • If you are not willing to put the time into raising a puppy, and that includes walking him EVERY day, then you're not old enough to have one. PERIOD! Puppies are a lot of work and walking one every day will be the least of your worries.. they are a huge responsibility and by your statement "Walks: not often" it tells me you aren't ready.
    Sorry!

  • All dogs need more walking then you are willing to give.

  • My neighbor (girl - 14 yrs old) has a pit bull puppy. This afternoon she had a friend visit, with her dog. While the two girls chit-chatted, their dogs were growling, leaping, nipping, barking. Until one bit the other, the girls saw nothing wrong with the behavior. Obviously these young ladies are not ready for a dog!

Please visit your local shelter, volenteer there, learn about aniamls and their care. Talk to family and freinds with dogs. Offer to pet sit, see what it takes to be a responsible dog owner. Ask alot of people, alot of questions.

You would be taking on a 15+ year commitment, 24/7, 365 days a year. Dog owners do not get hiolidays, sick days, or 'snow days' off. The cost of food, vet appointments, etc can be in the hundreds.

    Please do your research...

  • You need to have a WELL PAYING job, a car, and your own household, and the maturity above a fish.

Dogs aren't shelf animals that you can put away when you don't have time for them.

Two walks a week will end you with a neurotic dog. IF you dictate color, size, sex, etc you're too immature to take on the responsibility.

Its one thing to have an IDEA of a dog, but its a completely different thing to have a set mold picked out. Dogs aren't accessories to match your every mood and outfit.

  • Its not an age factor..

If you are under 18, it depends on if your parents are ready for the finances of caring for the dog, and if your parents are ready to take over the care of the dog if you grow tired of the dog, or when you move out or on to college.

If you are over 18, its a matter of you being able to AFFORD a dog, as well as have the time to dedicate to a dog's care.

Adopt from your local shelter or rescue... that's the only way you will find a dog for that price.. any breeder selling one that cheaply is selling unhealthy dogs.

  • I think 9 or over.

  • Well you should def. be over 10 because your more responsible.
