Star Wars Prequel and Trilogy



While it might seem incomprehensible to die hard Star Wars fans everywhere, there are actually many people throughout the world who have never even seen the first Star Wars movie, let alone in of the subsequent box office smash hits. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was released on May 25, 1977 after a very long and difficult battle to get it to the silver screen at all. One of the most confusing aspects of this film for individuals who have not closely followed the Star Wars craze is the fact that while it is the first film of the series to be released, it is actually the fourth part in the chronology of the series.

The film was later re-released in 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1997 to the box office and to VHS and DVD in 2000 and 2004. During those re-releases, there at times appeared significant changes to the film. The series begins 19 years after the Galactic Empire has been formed and follows the struggles of the main character, Luke Skywalker as he begins to train to be a Jedi. Later, Luke attempts a rescue of Princess Leia; who is help captive by the Empire.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was the second film to be released in the series and came out on May 21, 1980. This film follows the struggles of the Rebel Alliance as they continue to fight the Galactic Empire. One of the most poignant scenes in the film occurs when Luke Skywalker faces Darth Vader in an emotional confrontation. Similar to the first film in the series, The Empire Strikes Back was re-released in 1997 and 2004. Changes were also included in the newly released versions of the film.

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi debuted on May 25, 1983 as the third film in the series to be released. This film follows Luke Skywalker and his companions as they attempt to rescue Han Solo from the planet Tatooine. Meanwhile the Empire is planning further trouble for the group. Once again Luke Skywalker confronts his father, Darth Vader.

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace was the first film to be released in the prequel series and the fourth film in the overall Star Wars series. The film begins as a young slave, Anakin Skywalker, is discovered by Obi-Wan Kenobi; a Jedi apprentice. After Anakin wins his freedom he begins to train as a Jedi as well; only to be quickly caught up in an attempt of invasion forces to take over the planet Naboo.

Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones became the fifth film to be released in the series and the second film of the prequel series. It was released on May 16, 2002 and begins ten years after The Phantom Menace. An assassination attempt has been made on the former Queen of Naboo and a Jedi apprentice has been given the role of her protector. Her bodyguard, Anakin Skywalker soon discovers not only is love for the woman under his care but also the depth of his darker side.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released on May 19, 2005 and became the sixth film of the series. The film begins three years after the beginning of the Clone Wars. The importance of this film in the series is that it serves to bridge the gap between the original trilogy and the prequel series.
