Help PSP speaks German Thread (R)

  • So, yea, i'm taking german language course this fall and my goal is to be able to speak german a year from September. So I NEED YOUR HELP!

    Vielen dank!

    :)

  • This is also a pretty good site:

Brand names as they sound in German:
Adidas, Bayer, Braun, Porsche, Deutsche Bank, Lufthansa, Volkswagen

    People and things:
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Dr. Seuss, Loess, Neanderthal, Gerhard Schröder, Steffi Graf, Sigmund Freud, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Henry Kissinger, Jörg Haider

Common German words in English as pronounced by Germans:
Kindergarten, Gesundheit, Poltergeist, Strudel, Dachshund, kaputt, Schadenfreude, verboten, Ersatz, Rottweiler, Gestalt, Weltanschauung, Angst, Fahrenheit, Frankfurter, Wiener, Zeppelin, Leitmotiv, Rucksack, Fahrvergnügen

  • ich bin nicht 10, uberprufe mein profil!

    Do you play soccer?:
    No
    What position?:
    Midfield

    Sehr interessant!

  • ah are you in grade 10???

    hello = hallo

    good day = guten Tag(tak)

my name is Volker Finke = ich heiß(ss - like hiss)e(make an a sound) Volker Finke

how are you = wie geht's? (V gayts)

SC Freiburg is the number one in the country = SC Freiburg ist die nummer eins im Land :D

Also, "Volker" would be pronounced "Folk-air" :D

  • I took German 40 years ago, so I'm not only out of date, but out of practice.

    Danke!

    Grüße,

I checked my Deutsche Für Amerikanischer textbook dated 1960. "muß" was the proper form back then. ß was proper at the end of words!

    Tom

(I like to use umlauts and ß.)

  • Sehr interessant!
To be fair, the question is ambiguous. 'Do You Play Soccer' and 'What Position' are on different lines. 'What Position' could be in reference to any number of topics, many of which may also include 'Midfield' as a possible answer.

I have to give the benefit of the doubt to anyone from Tacoma. Where does one take a German course in T-Town, though? TCC? It's a shame 'The Bavarian' restaurtant got changed into an El Toro.

I know, that's how I learnt too back in school, but some not so bright people felt the desperate urge to change the rule in 1996. Now we have eye candies like "Basssolo" or "Missstimmung".

  • "muß" is now spelled "muss", ß is exclusivly used after long vowels (e.g. Fußball) or diphthongs (e.g. heißen, außen). You might want to take notes, PSP.
