Hi all,In a previous thread I asked about a sudden reboot problem I had on my old computer (32 megs ram running 98SE)and was given a lot of useful hints(still haven't got more ram or upgraded yet) but was surfing around and read somewhere that SpywareBlaster on some machines caused the same reboot problem and it had something to do with the ActiveX control. Not knowing to much about these things could this be a cause?I have since taken SpywareBlaster off (hated to do it its a great program) and it hasn't done it for over a week now(usually happens about twice a week).I know I should upgrade the whole lot but I really can't afford it at the moment :( .Could this be it? SnakyParanoid2000, Must be lucky.:)Originally posted by Snaky
I might add that OP hasn't given me any grief in this regard (solid as a rock!!).Snaky  Lucky you - I haven't been able to get Outpost to even install on my old computer - maybe it doesn't like the 1Mhz 6502 processor or the 48K RAM. Still unfair though - Apple ]['s have just as much need for a firewall as anyone else... :Droot,I'm slowly learning about these things and don't upgrade as often as what I use to(except from the necessities anti-virus and spyware etc...) and have gotten rid of the "luxuries"(hope I spelt that right ;) ) because I have noticed big changes in a lot of things I have updated to so called better versions to only find out its not for my inferior old machine.I think you hit the nail on the head in saying about programmers obviously assume that eveyone has at least 64meg of ram, and rightly so, there wouldn't be to many left thats running the same as me.I am just running SpyBot(with its immunisation facility) plus OP (with Erics list) and all seems fine.I might add that putting Opera on was a milestone for me (it even made it look fast....lol:D).Thanks for replying (I didn't think anyone was going to reply to this thread).I might add that OP hasn't given me any grief in this regard (solid as a rock!!).Snaky :cool:I suppose that's possible.
Unfortunately, you system seems inadequate for todays programs. Programmers have to make certain assumptions in writing programs and I'm sure most assume that todays average user has at least a PIII 500Mhz with 64 Megs of ram bare minimum.
If a program is written to accomodate older systems, then they cannot take advantage of most peoples more powerful computing abilities.
The trick is, for people in your situation, to find programs that do what they need to do, without the requirement for a more powerful system. It is still possible to find older programs that still work quite well and in fact do meet the average users needs for surfing, security, word processing, data management, etc.
How many people today have M$ Word with all its bells and whistles, and know how to do anything with it more than send a letter? Most people could probably get by with Word 98 and never miss all the crap that comes with the latest model.
Memory prices are very low right now and you may be able to double your memory for less than $40 and realise a trememdous boost in performance. Just something to keep in mind.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
