Qualified Les Bleus to WC 82.
oranje used to elicit the same feeling worldwide... but have you seen the thuggery they practice nowadays? it's to hang your head in shame.
... one has to stop saying that PSV Eindhoven is a team that puts their opponents to sleep and prevents them from expressing themselves. It's a bolder team than last year, which attacks, varies their game, which has skill. It's to the enormous credit of this club, which recruits very well...

but if you look, not only at last june's matches against portugal and especially the ivory coast, but also PSV's matches against OL the last two seasons, and compare to the glory days of oranje and ajax, or the 1994 semifinal agaist brazil or even ajax's CL success in the 90's, it's chalk and cheese.
the most salient aspect of what i've seen (admittedly not a great deal) of dutch football recently is the use of the foul as the primary tactical device. besides the physical wear and tear or the psychological effects, it chops up the rhythm of the game, effectively counteracting such secondary qualities as speed, power and skill.
Ya most of us do. Don't let anyone else see you say that or they'll call you a snob. :)
How so? This is a totally opposite view from what I heard on the netherlands board. Elaborate Please.
thats quite an admission (confession) Guignol. to be in the presence of greatness and to be so oblivious...but at least you can appreciate those players now!
it reminds me how I had a chance to see Zidane play with Real Madrid at Giants Stadium in NY but didnt hear about the game until after it was played. My only chance to see Zizou and I blew it. *sigh*
in any case, it's general etiquette, and also highly recommended to hang around a forum for a while before starting a thread.
so welcome, take the time to contribute a bit to the existing threads (there must be some subject here you find interesting) and you'll have your thread before you know it!
and mind you, i lived a year and a half in holland before ever coming to france and it took me a couple of years to root for france over the netherlands; as late as 2000 oranje held, if not dual, at least secondary allegiance from me.
-True. I still root for clockwork orange, but I also was of witness in seeing the huge fight between them and the portugese. That wasn't good sportsmanship on either side.
it's a rite sans mythe, a glorious and completely futile exercise, instantaneous and eternal, sublime and ridiculous... it's like sport only better.
No special reason at all, I am just a colorful person, and I feel it's a waste If I don't use it:p .
It's a bit different for me, when I was just a little kid I remember mi papi watching it, but I hadn't the feintest interest in the sport. Then I don't know why but for some reason I watched a couple games and then the WC 06, and was sucked in. I am more attracted to attractive football as well as the dutch team's total play and possession strategy.
Are you an administrator?
football, you'll find, is like wine, bach or proust; somewhat dull at first but with subtlety and richness that makes a lifetime too short to really explore all its beauties and complexities.
i used to be an american football, and especially baseball, fan. the first 2 years i lived in france football was simply a replacement. it took me a while to break through that layer where it was just jerseys running around on a field... (imagine that in travels before i came to france i had seen both cruyff and platini play without even realizing who i was watching, or even that they were any good!)
but now football is the only sport for me. it's taken 15 years, but i've finally figured it out a bit... the ball is round, there are 11 men a side, and in the end trezeguet misses his PK... and then you start over.
it's a rite sans mythe, a glorious and completely futile exercise, instantaneous and eternal, sublime and ridiculous... it's like sport only better.
